Taking its title from Vance Packard’s influential book ‘The Waste Makers’ from the 1960’s, which exposes the demise of the environment through the growth of disposable consumer goods, the exhibition asks us to think about themes around waste and how we might interpret, rework and re-examine them. How do we arrive at waste? Is it matter out of place? What is the difference between dirt and waste? And what is digital waste? Curated by Ian Dawson, the exhibition presents work from North America, India and the UK, representing the globalised nature of waste. Compound 13 lab, for example, is an experimental citizen led art space set up inside the informal settlement of Dharavi which is at the epicentre of the recycling trade in Mumbai. On Thursday 12th January Jefford Horrigan will perform The Graft and there will be workshops with Andrea Mason, Mia Taylor, Marie-Louise Jones and Erika Trotzig. Works and words made on the day will become part of the Wastemakers show as it accumulates during the show and towards its next venue.
With grateful thanks to Newhaven Art Space who provided the impetus and support for the project.
